Glamping at Strawberry Skys Yurts

Glamping, the word didn’t even exist when we moved to Wales with the intention of creating what we called a Yurt Campsite and naming it Strawberry Skys. Now, 14 years later glamping has literally exploded across the UK and become a global phenomenon shedding many of its original and humble “alternative lifestyle” trappings along the way and becoming very much a mainstream holiday option. So maybe now is the right time to explain more about why glamping at Strawberry Skys is different.

Yet, glamping still means so many things to so many people. Everybody has heard the word and everybody has their own list of expectations and ‘must-haves” without which their glamping holiday is not complete. For some, it means a short break in high-end luxury without any children. For others a hot-tub is an absolute necessity and for many it’s time to share outdoors with the family.

That’s before you even take into account the multitude of different accommodation types available. It was tipis and a few yurts, very eco-friendly, very off-grid when we started. Since then we’ve had bell tents, lotus tents, pods, shepherd huts, safari tents, domes, tree houses and a whole range of bespoke buildings which begin to stretch the definition of what we ever thought possible as a glamping structure.

Our (sort of) philosophy

Given all this, how did we go about deciding what was important? Is it the accommodation type? Is it the location? How did we figure out what our guests would want and would make them want to return? Many times over the past fourteen years we have been asked for a copy of “Business/Marketing plan and whether we would mind sharing our ideas. This always made us laugh, as quite simple, we didn’t have one. The growth and development at Strawberry Skys Yurts has been very organic and totally based upon being honest to ourselves, what we felt would be right, how we would like things to be if we were guests and treating our guests as we would like to be treated.

So what does this all mean? What is Glamping at Strawberry Skys Yurts and what should you expect from your glamping holiday with us? Well, we offer a relaxed, warm, welcoming, natural, open, safe, beautiful environment for you to come and share your valuable time in with the people you love the most.

It was both slightly surprising and deeply flattering to be met with “wow, you’re one of the originals” when introducing myself to a well established supplier recently. I admit, it put a smile on my face. I also realised that we still retain much of our original vision in what we do now. Strawberry Skys has always been about bringing guests to a beautiful place they would not normally have access to and allowing them to feel how we first felt when we came here. A glamping holiday at Strawberry Skys Yurts is as much about the outdoors as it is the indoor environment we provide within the yurts themselves. We never want our guests to forget how important the outdoors is. Sharing this beautiful environment with our guests is what makes Strawberry Skys so special.

What makes us different

Each of our yurts is a different size shape and design and they are spread apart from each other, most definitely not in a row. Our yurts have been especially sited around the field to ensure as much privacy as possible between them, so you are able to create and enjoy your own space. In fact “space” is a key word here at Strawberry Skys. You’ll get a good idea by looking our main Welcome Page.

You will find space. Lots and lots of space. Space around your yurts, space between the yurts, space to make your own and enjoy during your holiday. Nice big, open, natural spaces, safe spaces, so if you are bringing the family with you there is plenty of room to play.

Outside your yurt you will find your own campfire pit, your own BBQ and seating. These are essentials in our view, but not always a given and because we want you to relax and enjoy your stay we do not charge for campfire wood. In this way, collecting firewood from the woodshed becomes a holiday activity. Children love gathering firewood and learning to build the perfect campfire becomes a fun holiday activity. Then you will be able to sit around your campfire, roasting marshmallows, chatting under the stars and relaxing with your friends and family.

Things you could try

Or you may even want to try cooking over the campfire, a great way to fully experience the outdoors and something that has become increasingly popular over the past few years at Strawberry Skys Yurts. We urge you to give it a try. Our breakfast packs are amazing and full of wonderful local produce. We also supply BBQ packs from our award winning local butcher. We provide these options for you to pre-order and make your stay simpler, but you are just as welcome to bring your own. The important thing is to give campfire cooking a try.

Our wood-fired pizza oven has proven hugely popular too, it’s a whole evening, or lunchtime, worth of entertainment if you decide to make the whole thing from dough to toppings and we are more than happy to give advice and tips. Here’s a couple to start with 1. Use lots of flour, or even better Semolina, to stop things sticking. 2. Make some garlic bread from a plain pizza base first to check oven temperature and practice turning the base.

Don’t worry if these two suggestions are not for you. Our kitchen is equipped with full size gas hobs, electric oven and microwave. You will also have your own full size fridge. Or if you want to eat out we have fantastic pubs, restaurants and dining options, both nearby, or to include as part of a day trip. And, as ever, we are always happy to make suggestions and share our favourites. We’ve included a list here.

Exclusive use of the site

Increasingly, we find we are hosting group bookings who take all the yurts and have exclusive use of the whole site and we would agree, our site is perfect for this. Because we only have four yurts a group booking made of family, or friends is easily achievable and groups can retain the intimacy they desire to make a glamping holiday at Strawberry Skys Yurts truly memorable. Children can run around and play own the rope swings having their own adventures while adults can relax and catch up knowing everyone is safe and everything is taken care of.

A fantastic base to explore from

Whilst group bookings tend to stay on site more another key attraction to Strawberry Skys Yurts is our location and proximity to so many different activities and sites. Beach, mountains, walking & hiking, waterfalls, rivers, cycling, lakes, beautiful vistas and stunning scenery are all within easy reach and lend themselves to wonderful days out full of adventure and activity. We have compiled a list here to give you some idea.

It’s about you, the guests

Without doubt, the greatest pleasure from owning your own glamping site is making guests our guests feel welcome and happy, to see the appreciation for all the effort you have and acknowledgment for the thought put in. It doesn’t have to be big stuff, sometimes it’s the smallest of details which can make all the difference. Like complimentary marshmallows and wonderful roasting forks to cook them on.

At Strawberry Skys we have always put our guests first and based all our decisions around the simple concept of “how would we like to be treated”. “Simplicity’ is one of the key elements to a successful glamping holiday. Whether you are staying in one of our traditional Mongolian yurts, or one of our newer all wooden yurts we want your break to be as relaxing as possible and to ensure that happens we keep things very, very simple.

The essentials like wood, kindling, firelighters, matches, toilet paper are all supplied and there are no extra charges for any of these things. You arrive and if we’re here which is most of the time, we’ll show you around. We appreciate you’ve just travelled to get here and being on hand to show you a few things, or point you in the direction of the nearest food can make all the difference.

We hope this begins to give you an idea about glamping at Strawberry Skys and why a holiday here will be different. For us it’s about sharing space and time with family and friends, doing the things we love, cooking, eating, relaxing, exploring, playing, laughing and chatting in a beautiful natural environment. If you love these things to, please get in touch.
